Title: Unit X Alexander McQueen Paper Creations Brief – “Skeletal Fragility.”

Within my group, I designed an exhibition space to house my teammates’ garments and made the moving 1:20 model out of a paper. The space is comprised of a corridor (which gets narrower and peels away revealing the garments), and an opening with ‘breathing’ walls and a moving abstract chandelia – submitted via video format. This exhibtion was all accompanied by a dark ambient soundpiece I made.

Title: ID2 – Healthcare Design

For this brief, I designed an Opticians within The Cornerhouse building on Oxford Road, Manchester.

#3

Title: ID1: Beginnings

For this first brief, I was tasked to create a 3×3 Metre space to fit anywhere in Manchester. I chose to make my space to encourage visiters to admire the Industrial landscape.

#4

Title: “Undesirable” surface textures

Media/size: Experimental painting – Cardboard, water-based paints, graffiti pen, plaster and chicken wire. Sketchbook – 35 mm photo, plaster, digital photo printed on tracing paper, spray-paint. All mounted on A1 paper.

Description: I’ve become obsessed with unique textures and marks made on walls I observe on the streets/inside buildings such as layered graffiti and weathered concrete. I attempted to recreate similar textures on cardboard to make it appear like degraded concrete behind a torn wire fence. I used plaster to create similar textures to those in top left photos.

#5

Left – Bar in Berlin. I found the strip lighting above the figure created an interesting effect. Taken and edited on my phone.

Right – A collection of Black and White analogue photographs of buildings and structural details – half taken on a disposable camera in Berlin and the other half taken on a 35 mm camera in cities across the UK.

#6

Media/Size: Pencil (A5)

Description: Life drawing of a man playing pool observed in Banbury pool bar when collecting photographs for an art project based on artificial light within the ‘Nocturnal Built Environment.’

#7

Title: ‘Visualising Data’ art foundation project – 3D model and original wire frame sketches.

Media/Size: Model – different varieties of wire, staples, metal “Jacks”, glue, paint and chipboard (A4 base). Sketch – coloured pencil, fine-liner (A4)

Description: The data represented in this model are “the buildings that excited me the most during a specific week.” The sketches show my initial ideas when thinking around the concept. I chose materials that look jagged and uncomfortable to match the structures that inspired me (e.g. jacks to appear like barbed wire). Lastly, I made the structures cluttered together to appear like a crowded city environment.

#8

Title: Tate Modern interior study (A1)

Media: Oil and acrylic paint, 35 mm and digital photos, cardboard, pencil/charcoal, tracing paper and acetate.

Description: When exploring the interior of the Bankside power station, I loved the cold atmosphere of the dimly-lit cellar called ‘The Tanks’ (specifically the oil stained smooth concrete that surrounds you and the vast rows of pillars) – shown in the images on the left side of this A1 sheet. This space was contrasted by the surreal atmosphere of the warm orange Olafur Eliasson exhibition space, thus I wanted to present this juxtaposition on this study page.

#9

Title: Sketchbook Page Showing a drawing and model of a tube station roof (2 x A4). The model is roughly 30cm x 20cm x 27cm.

Media: sketch – coloured pencil and fine-liner. Model – wood, cardboard, canvas board.

Description: I photographed a unique concrete architectural structure within the roof of a tube station in London. I produced the above sketch of the triangular patterns within the structure before making a small replica model.

#10

Title: Sketchbook page studying stairs (2 x A4)

Media: Oil pastel, coloured pencil, pen, card

Description: On the right is a sketch of a staircase that caught my attention in the Manchester Metropolitan University building. In the middle is a quick pop-up card model of the same staircase. I was drawn to the unique shiny grey surface material of the staircase and the industrial yellow details. On the right are a collection of design drawings of staircase in preparation for a 3D model.

Title: ‘The Future of Oxford Station’ – 2x A1 sheets – sketches and photographs.

Description: These two sheets show my initial ideas and research into a project I am currently working on: re-imagining Oxford station as an uncomfortable, cyberpunk space in a dystopian future. My main influences are the set design of sci-fi films like ‘Blade Runner’, Brutalism and ‘Kowloon Walled City’. I intend to include materials and structural details that mirror a gritty pessimistic future such as weathered concrete and exposed pipes/wires.

#12

Title: Quick 3D Models based off my designs for the ‘Future of Oxford Station’ Project

Media: card, cardboard, cork, wood, glue gun

The two models on the right show me exploring structural ways to limit the natural light in the dark concrete platforms and smoking area. The door is my initial idea for a Brutalist contact-less ticket gate.

#13

Title: Final outcome of the ‘Future of Oxford station’ project – a 3D model showing a section of platform.

Media: Modroc, wood, corrugated cardboard, canvas board, newspaper, variety of paint, neon glow-sticks, wires and circuit boards from and old laptop, metal piping, tape and super glue.

This is a model is designed to look like a cyberpunk ‘concrete’ platform with a corrugated ‘metal’ roof. I used recycled computer parts, glow-sticks, a red flicking bicycle light, piping and graffiti to give the model a gritty, futuristic aesthetic (designed to be viewed in total darkness).

#14

Title: ‘Distorted Human Figures’.

Left painting – 92cm x 61 cm. The sketch and painting on the right are both roughly A3. The bottom painting is 101cm x 76cm.

Media: Oil paint, cotton, pencil

Description: This project explored how one can visually portray a ‘distorted human psyche’ and mental illness through artistic methods such as composition, colour palette and body language. Above shows the development of my ideas from a sketch; an experimental painting; to the two refined larger paintings. For the paintings I stuck cotton to the canvas to create a 3D rippling effect on the bed sheets.

#15

Title: Sketchbook page showing a small study of the Hayward Gallery, Southbank (2x A4)

Media: Left – Gouache, Paint maker pens. Right – Fine-liner

Description: When visiting, I became very interested in the Hayward Gallery’s collection of unique Brutalist architectural shapes making up the building’s concrete exterior. I focused on the outline of the sections that stood out the most to me.

#16

Title: Colour photographs

Media: The top two photographs are taken on a 35 mm analogue camera. The rest are either taken on my phone or on a digital SLR camera.

Description: These are all photographs taken of things that caught my eye when visiting different towns and cities. The bottom three photos focus on artificial light and were used as part of an art project focusing on ‘The Nocturnal Built Environment.’

#17

Media: Left – Silk-screen print on thin tracing paper (A5). Right – Silk-screen printed t-shirt created using a DIY emulsion method.

Description: For the left print, I cut out the smile and eyes from screen captures from two separate films and stuck them on a black painted background. I printed the image onto tracing paper, sliced it and rearranged it to create an off-putting atmosphere. The t-shirt was created based off one of my sketches as part of a series of t-shirts I made for friends and family. Both prints were self-directed in my spare time.

#18

Title: ‘Inscapes’ Project (31cm x 37cm and 32cm x 61cm)

Media: oil, emulsion and acrylic paint; spray paint; sand; printing ink and Indian ink applied using brushes, knives, thistles and a spray-nozzle bottle on card and wood.

Description: These paintings are both based off the same seascape – I experimented with expressionist mark making on the left painting first. I aimed to evoke the anger of the spitting waves on the rocks while simultaneously recreating the melancholic atmosphere caused by the sea mist.

#19

Title: ‘Crowded Urban Living’ final piece (75cm x 46cm)

Media: DIY emulsion photo transfer, Photoshop, acrylic, pen and ink

Description: I aimed to combine the different media in this painting with expressionist painting techniques to visually represent the overwhelming emotions associated with ‘crowded urban living.’

#20

Title: ‘The Nocturnal Built Environment’ A-level project

Media: sketch -pencil (A4). Experimental painting – acrylic and pen (A3) Larger paining – oil paint (60cm x 47cm)

Description: In this series I wanted to focus on how the artificial acidic-neon light from the petrol station fades into the darkness surrounding it and the atmosphere of isolation that I personally feel when looking at the photographs of this petrol station.
